Hi, my name is William Tribe, I have owned dogs all my life, I am the creator of www.my-dog-training-courses.com and as far back as I can remember I have been passionate about training dogs.
I am constantly being asked "why does my dog not come when called?" so I decided to post on the internet, a fool proof method which always works.
nThe most important element of training your dog to come when called, is choosing a word or phrase that when the dog hears it returns.
nIf you can whistle, which unfortunately I cannot, I recommend you choose that sound. If not you can pick the obvious one “come here, then the dogs name” the reason why I recommend to whistle or another high pitch sound is to make sure the dog can hear you and your not just background noise.
nAny word or phrase will do so long as you stick to it, I wouldn’t pick anything weird because people will hear this phrase and you don’t want to sound like a spoon. So would keep it relevant.
Slide 3
nIt is essential that you train your dog with no distractions and in a large area. Ideal places would be your garden or an open field or park.
nOnce you have found the location, make sure you bring treats and a ball with you.
nYou need to have the dogs attention, pronounce your phrase to the dog, say it exactly the same as you would if they were not returning. Then give them a treat.
nRepeat this about twenty times over a period of about six or seven minutes.
nThen throw a ball for them at first fairly close, but then gradually further and further away. Once they collect the ball shout the phrase, give them a treat once they return.
nIf they are not returning after speculative calling. Turn your back on them until they do, and when they return repeat the phrase and give them a treat.
nIf they are not interested in the ball, and just interested in the treats, do not collect the ball leave it. Turn your back on the dog and do not give any attention. Then they should collect the ball, if not try and use a stick or a toy which they like to play with.
Slide 4
nWithin two or three times of calling the dog in an location with no distractions the dog will return. Although this can depend of the intelligence of the breed.
nFor the first few walks take a few treats with you, so that if you need to call the dog back. You can give them a treat.
